Can you, can you taste the summer?

Now that it's almost July, we've had another warm weather day. It was about 29°C today, but warmer with the humidity. Hot, hot, hot!

I didn't start the day wearing this - I was wearing a red and brown dress when I went grocery shopping (twice a year, whether I need to or not) and in the produce section a very sweet young woman asked me where I got my dress. Unfortunately, I bought it in a local shop that is now closed. Anyway, I sweated through that dress so I changed into a t-shirt and shorts. But after dinner, we went out for ice cream at Marble Slab Creamery so I put this on.

Cardigan: Danier via Value Village
Dress: The Gap (about 2 years ago)
Shoes: Vivienne Westwood for Melissa
Wine: Fetzer Zinfandel

I didn't really need the cardigan - it was more for "modesty" since the dress is a racer back and sleeveless.

My backyard is a mess. When we bought this house in 2004, I was so excited to do some gardening. Turns out, I don't really enjoy gardening. When you garden you have to go outside. And when the weather is conducive to gardening, it's usually sunny. I don't like being outside in the sun.

So, my back garden is overgrown and has been taken over by gout weed and deadly nightshade. Such a shame because it used to be so nice. Maybe I'll get off my duff and dig it up. Or maybe I'll just sit on my deck (with my Christmas light still on it) drinking wine and not caring about the garden.

Tomorrow is Canada Day! Happy Canada Day (or Dominion Day in my parent's village)!

Stripes and ruffles

I wore almost this exact same outfit in May. Well, I wore the same top and skirt (and cardigan, not shown) - today I wore different shoes and accessories.

Shirt: Club Monaco
Skirt: ModCloth
Shoes: Fluevog Operettas | Malibran (last worn here)

The shoes make this a little dressier than the thong sandals.

I was wearing a cardigan with this but I took it off for the photos. I think that people should just assume that I'm wearing a cardigan at the office.

Here's why I was wearing a cardigan - the shirt has a bit of a scoop back which can be a little chilly when you're in an air conditioned office.

I took a picture of my jewellery today. My coworker bought me this bracelet today. The skull earrings and the necklace are by Missy Industry. The smaller ring is my wedding band and the larger ring is a ring my husband gave me for our 10th anniversary.

Skulls and ruffles. Skuffles!

I'm so ready for the weekend.

ZOUS

On Tuesday, I grew a Zit of Unusual Size (ZOUS) on my chin. You might not have believed they existed but I can confirm that indeedy they do, and not just in the fire swamp. I didn't have any of these great facial challenges while I was taking the birth control pill but ever since I stopped, pimples have taken to erupting at the most inopportune times and in the most obvious places.

It was on my chin. Thank goodness for make-up and concealer.

Since my face was so obviously flawed, I thought a pretty dress would make me feel better.

Dress: Free People
Shoes: Miz Mooz

My coworker complemented me on my dress and asked if it was new. I told him that I've worn it to work before and then I looked it up on my blog and told him that I wore it on January 5. Thank you blog!

The embroidery at the bottom of the dress reminds me of bats...and fried eggs or donuts?  Odd that.

This dress is quite forgiving of any figure flaws and it also covers my tattoos so I don't feel like I have to wear a cardigan or jacket.

Here's the back of the dress which is almost identical to the front, other than the tie.  Holy slouchy, Batman! What's with the bad posture?

Tomorrow is a Friday before a long weekend. Here's hoping it's QUIET!

Normal shoes

I was walking through the lobby of my office building today and a woman who works in a different office, who I've spoken to a few times, stopped me and said "You're wearing NORMAL shoes today!" I said "but they're orange and I'm wearing a crazy skirt"! She didn't think that the shoes being orange shoes was crazy enough. I guess they are rather sedate when compared to my other shoes.

Excuse the goofy face...

Cardigan: Pretty Things Boutique
T-shirt: Zellers
Skirt: Desigual from hautelook.com
Shoes: Town Shoes (last worn here)

When I saw that Haute Look had some Desigual pieces at a price significantly lower than retail, I jumped on this skirt and a dress. I really like the colourful pattern on the front.

And the circles on the back which look very 1970s.

The background looks black but it's really dark grey.

I thought these shoes would be a good match with the skirt but I think that they might appear too muted (or "normal") with this crazy skirt. Next time I'll try something brighter like my blue or red heels.

It's the Canada Day (July 1) long weekend so I get Monday off. Can't wait!

A stormy summer is rolling closer

Holy crazy rain today. Good thing I wore my rubber boots since it just keep raining and pouring and raining some more.

So I wore blue. Many shades of blue.

Jacket: Lilith (last worn here)
Top: Michael Kors
Pants: Smoking Lily (last worn here)
Shoes: Jump (last worn here)

I was considering parting with these shoes since I haven't worn them in 6 months but I think I'm going to keep them for a while longer. I like the t-bar shape but I'm not really a fan of the heel.

I bought this blouse in 2009 at Filene's Basement in Washington DC. It's very stretchy and bouncy. I like how the pleats make the fabric drape at the bottom. Like ripples in water.

I don't really have much to say about this outfit other than it's blue, comfortable, and I should probably wear this top more often than I've worn it in the last 3 years.

My new favourite skirt

I've only had this skirt since last Tuesday and I've already worn in 2 times. Must be looooove.

T-shirt: Joe Fresh
Belt made from a tie: Store in Osborne Village in Winnipeg
Skirt: Chalet from Cha Cha Palace
Shoes: Gidigio from gravitypope.com (last worn here)

It's linen so it wrinkles but it's funky construction makes up for it. It's wide but then pulls in again at the bottom.

I was wearing a jacket but I took it off because... IT WAS TOO WARM! Finally! It's almost July and we're just now enjoying from relatively consistent warmth.

I thought the colour of the shoes matched the hint of yellow in the tie/belt.

Other than that, we've made it through another Monday.

No smog, just fog

I haven't seen the sun since Wednesday afternoon in Winnipeg. The city has been enveloped in fog for 2 days. I think that our city's new slogan should be NO SMOG, JUST FOG! This is the only place I know where you can have high humidity and cool temperatures.  Hello frizzy hair!

I got dressed today because I went to Tim Hortons to have tea with my friends. If you're going to get dressed on a Sunday, you might as well enjoy when you're wearing.

Blouse: Vero Moda (from Envy - local store)
Skirt: Trapper Jane (from Love, Me Boutique which is sadly now closed)
Shoes: Chie Mihara Rostar

This skirt has pockets. Up with pockets!

And if you're going to get dressed then you might as well wear your favourite shoes.

And if you're going to get dressed, why not wear a necklace you've had for 35 years-ish! I found this recently and I can't believe I still have this. I also still have my 41 year old Raggedy Ann doll.

I also found a button that was made with my grade 2 picture on it. I'll have to wear this sometime.

If you're going to get dressed, be aware that you will be judged by Dougal. I'm not sure if I passed muster or not. It's hard to tell from that face.

Foggy Friday

I'm currently lying on my sofa with my cat Merlin in my lap watching the Germany vs Greece soccer match. When there's nothing else on TV, I tend to just keep the channel tuned to TSN. I'll watch just about any sport on TV - just not baseball or basketball which I find very tedious.

Today I had to get up early and drive B to the airport so I went back to bed after getting home. I got up around noon and decided to run a few errands like returning my recycleables in exchange for $14! I got rather gussied up for a trip to the Enviro-depot.

It's quite muggy here so I was able to go sleeveless and sweaterless.

Top: Orphanage clothing (last worn backwards here)
Skirt: Modcloth (last worn here)
Shoes: Fluevog Modvog Lambretta

(haha - modcloth and modvog)

I think this is the first time I've worn these shoes on the blog but I've had them for ages. I loved the Modvog family so much and am sad that they are no longer available.

I had a nice chat with a man at the Enviro-depot about my tattoos. He said my Puss in Boot tattoo was mesmerizing.  Then on the drive home, I had a chat with a road worker when I was stopped at a red light. Apparently I'm in a chatty mood today.

Here's the back. As you can see, last time I wore this back-to-front. I think it works well either way.

Hopefully we'll get some sun here this weekend.

Happy Friday.

Winterpeg, Manisnowba

Ok, so it's not winter here, but it's still cooler here than in most other parts of the country. I flew to Winnipeg on Monday for meetings and am leaving tomorrow. It takes a full day of travel to get here because flights go through Toronto, usually with a layover of a few hours, so it can be very tiring.

On the way here, I was seated next to a woman who kept invading my personal space and she didn't have anything to do like read, or play on an iPad, so she stared at me while I played Angry Birds. Also, I was on the aisle and when we landed she tried to get out into the aisle by climbing over me. I said "WAIT a minute!" I've never had anyone try to do that before. It was quite unnerving. Hopefully tomorrow's flight will be less weird.

Yesterday I wore my Charlotte Taylor ant dress that I recently had shortened. It was a maxi dress but I couldn't see myself wearing it at that length very often. I think its more wearable now.

Sweater: Pretty Things Boutique
Dress: Charlotte Taylor
Shoes: Franco Sarto

I'm probably the only government employee who has ever worn a dress with big red ants all over it to a meeting. Take that power suit!

After day one of meetings, my coworker and I went to the Cha Cha Palace, a very funky store indeed. I shouldn't have, but I bought a cool linen skirt and a tunic/dress thingy which is really neat.

This store sells Fluevogs, Fly London and Camper shoes. I wish they had boots like the one on the sign.

Unfortunately I left my grey cardigan there. It cost less than a cab ride back to the store though.

Today I wore the new skirt I bought.

It almost looks like pants but it's a skirt.

Sweater: Pretty Things Boutique
Cami: From Envy
Skirt: Chalet from Cha Cha Palace
Shoes: Fluevog Presence Hi | Desmond

Since I left my cardigan behind, I had to wear the red one again today. It didn't quite go with the grey and blue but it was necessary to keep me warm.

After the meeting we went to Osborne Village and I was very good. I only bought a belt made out of a tie, a plain black t-shirt, and a present for my husband which I won't reveal in case he reads this post.

I'm looking forward to getting home tomorrow AND I have Friday off. So thrilled about that.

Tonight we're going for supper at a place with a pizza oven and then we'll have an early night. Flight at 9 am!

How does it happen, does it fly through the air

Quick early post because I'm on my way to the airport to fly to Winnipeg, which is almost exactly the middle of Canada. I have a stop over in Toronto but not long enough to do anything other than hangout in the airport.

Here's my flying outfit.
Blouse: from Crimson and Clover consignment
Cami: Envy (local store)
Skirt: Smoking Lily Lilibet skirt (last seen here)
Leggings: Hue
Shoes: Fluevog Adrian | Alli

Lots of layers so if I get too warm I can adjust things and I have a cardigan to throw on if I get cold.

No yoga pant plane wear for me. =)

Saturday, June 16, 2012

It's Saturday, it's Saturday, hey nonny nonny and a ha ha ha

Busy day out and about but I'm taking a moment to recharge before going out again.

I finally had this skirt altered so it fits much better now.

Sweater: Pretty Things Boutique
T-shirt: All Saints in NYC
Skirt: ASOS
Shoes: Vivienne Westwood for Melissa

I love the skulls on this t-shirt so much and the fabric is very soft and drapey.

I know you can't see the shoes but they are these ones.

While I was out running around, I went to what is known as the "shoe Frenchy's". First of all, Frenchy's is an Atlantic Canada thrift store where the clothes are dumped into bins and you have to dig through a lot of stuff to find treasures. Today I found a 100% silk blouse that was 2 sizes too small so I left it behind. Anyway, this Frenchy's is stuffed with shoes. Unfortunately, most of them are pretty cheap and crappy so I doubt I'll go back.

Then I went to Crimson and Clover (mostly) Consignment and Oh My GOD you guys, if you're local you have to go and get some stuff! Lots of amazing things there! AMAZING STUFF!

Here's what I found:

Look! Cute grey blouse - $20. I can see myself wearing the hell out of this.

Then I saw this...

Crazy tunic which weird graffiti like design on it and funky colours. There's a mean looking girl on it and this is what sold me on it...

CATS! Cutie cats! Crazy cats!

And finally, these were pointed out to me. Fly London wedge boots with buttony goodness! I love boots with button details as shown here, here, and here. And their orangy colour is lovely.

Going there is dangerous but if you live in the Halifax area you're missing out on some great things. And next Saturday is 80's day!

Turning Japanese

Today was a very strange day clothing wise. More on that later.

Necklace: gift from coworker from Sierra Leone
Pin: Pretty Chic
Dress: Desigual from Envy (local store)
Leggings: Hue
Shoes: Fluevog Prepares | Guide

Yesterday I went to the mall downtown to pick up some clothing from the tailor. I had a few things that need alteration and when I dropped them off they asked me to give them a week and a half. I gave them a little more than that but they weren't finished yesterday. I should have walked right back out to my car but nooooooo, I had to "window shop". And I found this Desigual dress, on sale.

It's not one of their better made pieces, probably from a less expensive line, but I love the Japanese imagery and designs.

(on the back it says "New and Good")

I started off the day without the leggings and wearing my Noa Noa tulle skirt underneath the dress. Have you ever worn tulle right next to your skin? So uncomfortable! I took it off but this dress is shorter than I prefer so I felt kind of naked so I went out at lunch and bought these leggings. I was also wearing crazy awful support underpants (TMI) that I'm throwing in the garbage! Who needs those kind of uncomfortable underthings in their life?

I also took off the necklace for most of the day because it's very heavy.

Here's a close-up of the design on the front. Pretty.

BTW, the title of this post comes from the Vapors' song of the same name.

Happy Anniversary

Today is my husband's and my 15th wedding anniversary. I can't believe it's been that long. I don't have any digital photos from my wedding day since there wasn't digital photography way back in the dark ages so I can't post any but I can show you that my husband bought me the most appropriate card ever.

Shooooooes. Brent is as much of a shoe addict as I am so it's doubly appropriate.

Speaking of shoes, I found these vintage Fluevog Swordfish boots on Etsy last week. I couldn't resist them even though it's going to be a while before I can wear them, unless it gets cooler again.

I liken my reaction to seeing these boots to these seagulls from Finding Nemo.

Today was a beautiful sunny and warm day so B and I had lunch on a patio downtown. Unfortunately I wore black today so it was rather warm.

Sweater: Joe Fresh
Dress: Elroy Apparel
Leggings: Joe Fresh
Shoes: Fluevog Wonder | Ayers

I bought this dress a few years ago and when it arrived it was really much too short for me to wear without something underneath it. I really like the white detailing.

This outfit made me feel pretty and confident. I'll have to wear this dress more often.

After work I went to the tailor to pick up a few things I'm having altered. They were not ready yet so I popped into another store and found a Desigual dress on sale for $65.00. It may have found it's way home with me and I may be wearing it tomorrow.

Beady

Black and grey ruled the day. But the main feature of this outfit is this necklace.

Necklace: The Bay
Sweater: Zellers
T-shirt: Joe Fresh
Pants: Lilith in NYC
Shoes: Fly London

All these strands of beads are connected together at the back so it really is just one piece. I like it but I tend to obsessively play with them while I'm working. Maybe that helps me think?

It has been a nice sunny week so far but it's still rather chilly most of the day. Hence the sweater and the wintery booties.

This shirt and the sweater were uber-cheap while the pants and shoes were more expensive. It's interesting how many outfit/fashion bloggers are mixing less expensive brands with pricier pieces. It's all part of mixing and matching and creating new combinations.

Anyway, enough blabbing for now.

Stripes and dots and stripes, OH MY!

Today my co-worker asked me if I plan my outfits in advance and strangely I don't. Or if I do, I generally change my mind in the morning. I guess I'm a "fly by the seat of my pants" kind of girl. I'm easily distracted and give in to my whims.

For example, I didn't know what to wear today so I picked out a pair of shoes and built this around them.

Sweater: Pretty Things Boutique (last worn here)
T-shirt: Lilith from Paris
Belt: from Lüt Boutique in Vancouver
Skirt: Smoking Lily (gift from Sheila, last worn here)
Shoes: Anna Sui for Hush Puppies (last worn here)

Another co-worker (Hi L!) jokingly noted that HORRORS, I'd be showing these shoes again so soon on the blog! Forgive me.

Whenever I tell people that these are Hush Puppies they are pretty shocked. I guess I should be more clear and say they are Anna Sui for Hush Puppies but not many people I work with will have heard of Anna Sui. Oh well.

Know you're weird. No, you're weird!

Sunday fun, Monday hung

First off, here's a link to the article about local fashion bloggers. Just a little snippet about me and some links to some other great local blogs.

Necklace: F21
Blouse: Smoking Lily
Pants: Esprit from eBay
Shoes: Fluevog Faiths Low | Reumah

This is the face of a rather hungover gal. For some stupid reason I decided to make merry last night and drank a few too many Strongbow ciders. Blargh.

Today we finally had warm and dry weather so I broke out my Reumahs. I love the wooden platform and the stripes. They are surprisingly comfortable but I probably shouldn't have gone out for a walk in them at lunchtime.

I was going to write a wrap-up to Atlantic Fashion Week but there are some great ones already written:

Fashionable People, Questionable Things
Flare Magazine
Reginald Magazine

Happy 50th Birthday Nick Rhodes

Happy 50th Birthday Nick Rhodes

Picture taken from the lovely Kitty Amsbury's website.

Day late

Here's my Thursday outfit. I'm late with it because yesterday after work I just scooted home and changed so I could go to the Atlantic Fashion Week Emerging designers event. My husband is the event photographer so I thought it would be a fun evening out looking at clothing.

June 7

Necklace: etsy
Tunic: Lüt Boutique in Vancouver
Belt: from China
Pants: Lilith (last worn here)
Shoes: Fluevog Prepares | Guide

I love these shoes about as much as Sheila loves hers. I don't know how she can go without wearing them again while she's doing her clothing challenge. She's made of stronger stuff than I!

I think these shoes match these pants perfectly which makes a nice long line.

Two years ago my husband went on a photography trip to rural China, near the border with Tibet. He bought me this belt for next to nothing. I love how colourful it is.

I'd like to do a longer post about last night's event but I have to get ready for tonight's Designer Showcase. I will show you my favourite pieces from the Emerging Designer's show though.

I loved this dress from Mitchell Gilroy.

and also this dress from Blue Ladybug.

All all of this body jewelery from Overman who is from Charlottetown, PEI. It was gorgeous! Such amazing metal work. This was my favourite piece of the entire show.

Days of Grey

Yes, it was cold enough today for a turtleneck sweater!

Top: unknown brand
Corset: Spaks Mannsspjarir from Reykjavik
Skirt: Smoking Lily (worn here)
Shoes: Fluevog Adrian | Alli (worn here)

I had an entirely different outfit planned for today which included this corset top but this was a last minute fill in outfit. It was just too cold for my original idea. Hopefully I'll get to wear it soon.

I love this corset top and everything that was in the Spaks store in Reykjavik. Their designs are so unique and the clothes are so well made.  I wish I'd been able to buy more.

I don't like this shirt layered underneath the corset though. In fact, this shirt is going to leave my wardrobe. I don't like how hippy it makes me look so "buh-bye" shirt!

This corset would look so much better without that messy looking peplum sticking out the bottom (and with a less wrinkly skirt).
Tonight at dinner, my friend told me that she's only ever been to 5 concerts in her life so I tried to list all the concerts I'd been too. Here's what I came up with:

James Taylor - 1980ish (with my parents)
Images in Vogue - 1986ish (at my high school)
Erasure - 1989 in Toronto
Sloan and The Pursuit of Happiness - 1991 (at university)
The Barenaked Ladies - 1991 (at university)
Chris Isaak - 3 times between 1992-1994
Morrissey - 1992 at Canada's Wonderland
Skinny Puppy - 1993 in Toronto
Molson Park music concerts - 1993, 1994
Depeche Mode - 1994 at Canada's Wonderland
The Tragically Hip - 1995 in Harrisburg, PA
Lloyd Cole - 1995 in Toronto
The Stone Roses - 1995 in Toronto
The Tragically Hip - 1998 in Halifax
Lloyd Cole - 2001 in Boston
The Tragically Hip - 2003 in Halifax
The White Stripes - 2007 in Halifax
The Pixies - 2011 in Halifax
Arcade Fire - 2011 in Halifax
Lloyd Cole - 2011 in Halifax
Duran Duran (with Neon Trees) - 2011 in Montreal

Kind of a weird mix of bands and singers. I'm going to see Duran Duran again in August/September - whoot!
